More Moms Wanted!
Elevating the value of motherhood
Like you, I have a mother. My mother, by God’s grace, is a faithful, loving mother to my brother and me. But there was little about my mom’s mothering work that was glamorous. Most of it, actually, included mundane tasks of caring for our physical needs, tending things around the house, and giving us opportunities to learn, play, build friendships.
She and my dad also took us to church and led us to Jesus.
Moms are essential, not only for the obvious childbearing reasons, but also for the imperative childrearing reasons. The world needs more kids, and every kid needs a mom.
God set it up like this from the beginning. Let me say that again. When the God of the universe ordered creation, He placed a high priority on men and women marrying and bearing children.
This orthodoxy should lead us to an orthopraxy that encourages young women to marry godly men and have kids, that elevates motherhood as a high and holy calling, and that orders our lives to provide everything mothers need to flourish.
This means that churches should not only honor moms on Mother’s Day, but prioritize marriage and family ministries for believers and unbelievers alike. In most counties in Tennessee, for example, at least one-third of children are being raised by a single parent, usually the mom. Churches have an opportunity to invest deeply in these neighbors.
Christian higher education should develop pathways and curriculum that elevate marriage and family to the heights of any other ministry preparation track.
And parents should encourage their children to marry and multiply a godly legacy.
Women who marry, have children, and nurture those children at home are not settling for less, being sidelined from seats of power, or missing the good life. They are, instead, fulfilling a high calling from God.
While marriage urgency wanes, birth rates decline, and the pursuit of self-actualization rises, motherhoood has become countercultural, even among many Christians.
And yet, God’s design for marriage and family has not changed. So, when we say, “Happy Mother’s Day,” we’re also saying, “More Moms Wanted!”
If this encourages you, please share with friend or foe.
