We celebrate Christmas every year because we need to remember. We need to return to timeless truths that announce the coming of our King—the King who came to deliver us from the curse of sin and to give us new and everlasting life.
To that end, I’ve listed Twelve Truths that Make Christmas Merry:
Truth #1
Christmas is fun, but it’s more than a sentimental holiday for family, friends, gifts, and good works. It is a theological declaration that the sinless God-Man, Jesus of Nazareth, eternally existent put on flesh to triumphantly defeat Satan’s scheme, redeem us from our sin, and reconcile us to God.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
Truth #2
Before the foundation of the world, God had each of us on His mind and He was delighted to send His Son to rescue us from our sin and to reconcile us to Himself. Jesus has always been and will forever be a willing, joyful, and sufficient Savior.
For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. 5 He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he lavished on us in the Beloved One. Ephesians 1:4-6
Truth #3
God is never early or late. His plan is never forced or foiled. The Incarnation of Jesus came at just the right time according to the eternal decree of God to redeem us. We celebrate like a kid at Christmas because God is ever faithful to adopt us and make us His very own.
When the time came to completion, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5
Truth #4
We do not define love. God is love, and He always acts consistently with His character. Christmas, the giving of His Son, is the fullest expression of His love for us. We glorify Him by receiving His Son and enjoying His presence forever.
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Truth #5
Through the Incarnation, God in Christ came near and took on our every infirmity, so that through His life, death, and resurrection, we can be known by Him and draw near to Him now and forever.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16
Truth #6
Jesus put on flesh and dwelt among us to clothe us in His perfect righteousness. We celebrate Christmas because while we were still sinners, Jesus bore the penalty we deserved and granted us the forgiveness we never could.
For just as through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19
Truth #7
While the law reminds us of our inability to satisfy the just demands of a holy God, the grace of God found in the Incarnation of Jesus sets us free from the bondage of sin and nullifies every condemning accusation of the enemy.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, 2 because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2
Truth #8
We don’t achieve joy. We receive joy. Jesus’ birth is good news of great joy for every wayward and weary soul who receives Him as Savior.
But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:10-11
Truth #9
We celebrate Christmas because nothing less than Jesus is enough, and nothing more than Jesus is necessary to give us new and eternal life.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, 5 made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! Ephesians 2:4-5
Truth #10
Christmas is a global celebration because God invites all kinds of people from every tongue and tribe to come near and worship Jesus.
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:1-2
Truth #11
The grace of God entered time and space through His favor shown to an unsuspecting peasant girl named Mary. The gift of Christmas, God’s saving grace, is offered exclusively through Christ to anyone who receives him by faith.
And the angel came to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 Then the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:28-30
Truth #12
Our heart rejoices and our voice sings because we’ve encountered and experienced the long-awaited, prophet-promised, life-giving King of kings.
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had seen and heard, which were just as they had been told. Luke 2:20
PICTURE OF THE WEEK
My youngest daughter, Hannah, got all dolled up to attend the Winter Formal with her friend Bradon last weekend. Not only does she look stunning, but she’s an amazing, Jesus-loving young lady. These moments are the best.
