For Our City

They didn’t want to be captives of a foreign power thousands of miles from home, but they were. They didn’t know the language. They didn’t appreciate the culture. And they didn’t want to stay very long. But as the people of God found themselves in Babylon, the prophet Jeremiah gave them these words of instruction:

This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles I deported from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 “Build houses and live in them. Plant gardens and eat their produce. 6 Find wives for yourselves, and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and give your daughters to men in marriage so that they may bear sons and daughters. Multiply there; do not decrease. 7 Pursue the well-being of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the Lord on its behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive. -- Jeremiah 29:4-7

The people of God had three simple priorities: (1) plant your life in the city, (2) pursue the peace, wholeness, or well-being of the city, and (3) pray for the city.

As we seek Jesus’ kingdom first, loving our neighbors well still includes these three priorities. So we as we live “for our city,” we are also work “with our city” to build collaborative networks between every area of influence so that that every person has the opportunity to experience the life God created them to experience.

About Daryl Crouch

I’ve served as a local church pastor for over 25 years, and I’ve seen the value of churches and community leaders working together for the good of the city. When we know each other, trust each other, and come together around the things we care about, transformation takes place.

So I really enjoy connecting people, gathering people, and helping people work together to make their communities places of peace—peace with God and peace with one another.

I live in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, Deborah, and we have four children. I also serve as pastor of Green Hill Church and lead Everyone’s Wilson—a coalition of Gospel-loving churches committed to seeking the welfare of everyone in Wilson County, Tennessee.
